The Offenders by Jerry Craft

A freak accident gives five middle school kids (from very diverse backgrounds) super powers. But instead of being able to transform into cool super-beings, they are forced to take on the characteristics of the kids they pick on. Now they're the ones who are being teased, and by the same kids who they are trying to help! Sure their abilities may be at an all-time high, but do they really have what it takes to save their school when their self-esteem is at an all-time low?

The only thing they know for sure is they're about to learn one "powerful" lesson in compassion! This is a great book for summer reading AND if you're a librarian, my cartooning workshop featuring the book is a great addition to your summer "Every Hero Has a Story," theme.

Creative, funny, and engaging – this book presents a unique look at the dynamics of bullying. With a diverse cast of characters, the book illustrates that bullying affects everyone – and that the students who are bullying can change their behavior and make their school a more positive place.

— PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center

"The Offenders is the best use of detention since The Breakfast Club - funny, exciting, and the most charming thing I've read in ages. Writing something entertaining is tough, but writing something important is even tougher. Jerry and his boys have made it look easy."

Love the book! Serious topic, funny, real! The "Offenders" is a multicultural, refreshingly funny twist on a very serious topic that is affecting the social, emotional and educational stability of our children and young adults. When bullies get to step into their victims shoes for a while it doesn't feel so good, but many lessons are learned as the bullies realize their actions have consequences. We see the human side of the bully who is more often than not a product of bullying. It makes you want to scream, "EVERYONE, PLAY NICE!" The cycle has to stop somewhere. This book is a start!

First I should say, I won this through a Goodreads giveaway. What a fun book!!! I just love stories that both adults and kids can enjoy. Full of pep, humor, colorful characters, and a great lesson to share with the whole family. This book is a fantastic way to teach kids about bullying. In fact, The Offenders was such a joy that I immediately gave it to my best friends son to read. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Dear Mr. Craft,

I bought "The Offenders" at the Black Comic Book Festival at the Schomburg Center and I read it as soon as I could. I really loved it because all the characters kinda had a back-story and, at the end, the book tells you how they're doing after defeating their enemy and figuring out the full extent of their powers. I'm going to recommend it to my friends at school. It's pretty cool that you wrote it with your sons.

— Leela, age 10.

I read Jerry Craft's new book "The Offender." It was wonderful. I could not put the book down. It shows the pain of bullying from a different perspective. I know both students and teachers will love this book. I cannot wait for my students to read it! This book is a must for educators and parents to read with their children

A great tool to teach kids about the effects of bullying. The Offenders combines humor, adventure and plenty of subtle teachable moments that make it a great read for both students and teachers. I can't wait to share it with my class!

I finished the book! And it was awesome! I'm gonna recommend it to couple of my friends who I think would be interested, and I also want to thank you for writing a book that's fun and a has a meaningful theme that can change the way children behave and act. And I'm also wondering if there's a second book.

A colleague loaned me her copy of The Offenders. The book is so GREAT that I finished reading it already, and I've only had it for 1 day! I think our students are really going to LOVE the book. I know that teachers will also love it because it teaches kids that it's not okay to be a bully, and it does so in a creative and entertaining way. I can't wait to read it to my students, and then make it part of my personal classroom library. This book was FANTASTIC!!!!

The Offenders by Jerry Craft

The Offenders does a great job of putting the effects of bullying in perspective while still being incredibly funny, whether you're 8 or 48.

The Offenders by Jerry Craft

This is a wonderful book. Jerry Craft and his teenage sons have come together to take on the world of bullying. This book shows how mean kids can be, especially if they don't realize it, but it's bullying with a twist! Despite the fact of getting super powers, these bullies get a taste of 'what goes around, comes around' when theyre forced to take on the aspects of the kids they bully instead becoming super cool kids with powers. So now they're the ones being teased.

There's lots of action, video games, evil sisters (YES!) and is totally hilarious. Boys will have fun with this book (and so will girls).

Known for his Mama's Boyz series, The Offenders: Saving the World, While Serving Dentention is a great entrance to the world of the Middle Grader.

Can you tell I loved this book?

The Offenders by Jerry Craft

I have seen this book on Amazon quite a few times when I have been searching for books to buy my nieces and nephews. I hadn't picked it up because I like to read a book before I give it out as a gift which is why I was excited to be chosen to receive a copy in the Goodreads First Reads program. This book is great for children and still fun for an adult. I love the way the author puts the bullies into the bullied children's shoes. With bullying becoming such a rampant problem this book managed to find a way to be serious about bullying while injecting excitement and humor which will keep kids wanting more

I'm Korean, I'm adopted, and I'm the smallest kid in my class. Yeah, sometimes I pick on this kid named Reggie. He's twice as big as me, but he's so soft. I'm not a bully ... now my older brother Bryce? ... now HE'S a bully!

I'm not a bully either! No way! At least there are other black kids in the school. Try being the only Puerto Rican kid. They don't understand me, and neither does my family!
